The Miles Bates House - Palm Desert - A visionary project by architect Walter S. White

Unique and stunning!  This mid-century jewel in Palm Desert was designed by visionary architect Walter S. White (1917 – 2002) in 1954-55. The home has a patented new roof construction called “the roller coaster roof” for its innovative wave shape consisted of a dovetail flexible system that allows it to be shaped to curves seen in local mountains behind it.

The owner and artist Miles Bates partnered with the architect for a one of a kind project that is defined not only by the roof line but its curved walls, in-ground cooling system and efficient use of a small space. The home exemplifies White’s inspiration for the desert landscape while exploring new ways to improve energy efficiency and construction expediency.

The Miles Bates House is on the National Register of Historic Places and is scheduled to be auctioned by the city of Palm Desert. More info can be found here: http://www.cityofpalmdesert.org/our-city/departments/public-works/milesbateshouse
